Doctor Bug is full of my personal picks for non-toxic pest products that really work around the house, garden
and in my yard. I’m not an “Organic Fanatic” but I’ve been disappointed with so many of the traditional products
found in Big-Box stores and made by Big-Brand companies. Not only do many of these products have limited use in
pest control, most use a poisonous method to get rid of pests. I’ve found that there are new solutions for pest control
which use insect attractants, pheromones, new compounds based on natural sources and simple sticky traps to
effectively control pests. Without toxic side-effects!
I was alarmed to see reports about how pesticides affect our children. I’m tired of having to make a choice
between relief from pests and using toxic compounds. The human and environmental tolls are astounding. Every
person in the world still carries DDT metabolites in their fat cells (even though Nixon banned the use of DDT in the
US in 1972) and is exposed to many toxic compounds in their daily food. A 2005 study conducted in Seattle, WA
showed that placing children on an organic diet dramatically and immediately reduces their pesticide levels by the
very next day. I was shocked when I looked at the figures in the report. The researchers concluded:
... that an organic diet provides a dramatic and immediate protective effect against exposures to
organophosphorus pesticides that are commonly used in agricultural production. [They] also concluded that
these children were most likely exposed to these organophosphorus pesticides exclusively through their diet.
And the EPA recently (August 2006) determined in a long term study
(http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/cumulative/2006-op/op_cra_main.pdf) that there is no long term harmful effects
from organophosphate pesticides, the same compounds found in our children from eating contaminated food. I
think, given a choice, I choose not to expose my family and pets to these compounds.
